WBEZ Gets Candid Look Into Violence Intervention Work with INVC Outreach Supervisor Fredrick Seaton

In a recent ride-along interview with WBEZ, the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago (INVC) Outreach Supervisor Fredrick Seaton provided a closer look into the vital Community Violence Intervention (CVI) work being done on Chicago’s West Side.
Every day, Seaton and his team are boots on the ground in West Garfield Park, ready to de-escalate or intervene during tense situations. WBEZ’s reporting takes readers into the moments directly following a fatal shooting and details how CVI professionals spring into action to avoid any further retaliation.
“With relationship gathering and being credible messengers, we’re going to be able to work with the community to stop the next shooting,” Seaton said.
The story also notes the overall decline in violence numbers this year and the narrowing of the “safety gap”—the difference in murder counts by race—across the city. This, in part, is due to the efforts of CVI workers around Chicago who are invested in keeping our streets safe.
INVC is one of 15 organizations representing Communities Partnering 4 Peace, which is convened by Metropolitan Peace Initiatives.
