Supporting Community Violence Intervention Efforts: A Guide for Businesses

Community gun violence is a significant issue that affects cities across the globe. Businesses and corporations have a vital role to play in supporting efforts to reduce the violence and create safer communities.

Why? Because it’s in their best interest. Community gun violence isn’t only the responsibility of politicians and residents. Your customers want you to step up and do your part to create change. Plus, studies show that more than half of American consumers would be more interested in buying products from companies that are actively working to reduce gun violence as opposed to companies that aren’t.

By leveraging your resources, influence, and expertise, your business can make a meaningful impact on community violence intervention (CVI) efforts already taking place across the city of Chicago.

This guide outlines practical steps your company can take to support Communities Partnering 4 Peace (CP4P) and the Metropolitan Peace Initiatives (MPI) – and help stop gun violence in Chicago.

CP4P & MPI By the Numbers

6 Ways Your Business Can Help

1. Financial Support

  • Direct Funding: Provide financial support to community organizations and non-profits like CP4P & MPI that are actively engaged in gun violence prevention and intervention programs in the city. This funding can help sustain existing programs, expand services, and reach more people in need. This could include sponsoring a CP4P/MPI program, initiative or event.
  • Grant Opportunities: Establish grant programs specifically aimed at supporting community organizations working on gun violence prevention and intervention. This could include offering grants for innovative projects, capacity building, or infrastructure improvements.

2. Employment Opportunities

  • Hire CP4P/MPI Program Participants & Alumni: Create job opportunities for Chicago residents affected by gun violence and/or those who just need a second chance. By partnering with CP4P/MPI’s Workforce Development team in providing pathways to stable employment, your business contributes to current CP4P/MPI program participants’ and alumni’s economic stability and reduces the likelihood of individuals turning to violence in order to provide for themselves and/or family.
  • Training and Skills Development: Offer training programs and apprenticeships that equip Chicago residents with the skills needed to access employment opportunities within your company or other industries.

3. Investment in Communities

  • Use Your Traditional Investment Strategies in More Concentrated Ways: Invest in community development projects that improve infrastructure, access to healthcare, education, and other essential services in neighborhoods affected by gun violence. This contributes to long-term stability and resilience. This could include investments in affordable housing and community centers, providing resources and opportunities for community residents.
  • Support Local Businesses: Prioritize sourcing goods and services from local businesses in communities affected by gun violence. This can help stimulate economic growth and stability, contributing to long-term violence prevention efforts and building stronger ties with residents.

4. Partnerships and Collaboration

  • Collaborative Initiatives: Forge partnerships with other businesses, community organizations, government agencies, and law enforcement to develop comprehensive violence intervention strategies. Pooling resources and expertise can lead to more effective and sustainable solutions.

5. Advocacy and Public Awareness

  • Public Support: Use your corporate platform to advocate for policies and initiatives that address the root causes of community gun violence, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of access to resources. This can include signing onto public statements, participating in advocacy campaigns, or engaging with policymakers. Efforts could include joining our “One Table” approach and/or advocating for increased funding for CVI programs at the local and state levels.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Launch a public awareness campaign to educate your employees, customers, and the broader community about the impact of community gun violence and the importance of CVI efforts. This could include social media campaigns, educational workshops, or community events.

6.  Employee Engagement and Volunteerism

  • Skills-Based Volunteering: Encourage your employees to volunteer their time and expertise to support community organizations working on gun violence intervention. This could involve offering pro bono services, teaching workshops at the Metropolitan Peace Academy, mentorship or providing technical support.
  • Employee Volunteer Days: Offer paid volunteer days for employees to participate in community service projects related to community gun violence prevention. This not only supports the community but also fosters team building and employee satisfaction.

Businesses and corporations have a responsibility to contribute to the well-being of the communities they serve. By implementing the strategies outlined in this guide, your business can play a significant role in supporting CVI efforts and creating safer, more resilient communities for everyone.
